Consumer perceptions of sustainability labels for alternative food networks

Purpose Sustainability labels play a crucial role in providing consumers with quick and easily accessible information to assess the environmental, social economic impacts of products. This research examines how different sustainability influence consumer perceptions assessments alternative food networks (AFNs). Design/methodology/approach The authors conducted three cross-sectional studies explore for AFNs. tested representing dimensions, graphical quality awarding bodies. Findings Consumers did not differentiate between dimensions but assessed holistic manner. overall rating label positively influenced perceived sustainability. Self-designed professionally designed had positive effect on intention buy from an AFN. Professionally also enhanced authenticity networks. Notably, source label, whether self-awarded or awarded by official body, significantly impact perceptions. However, interaction effects revealed stronger purchase when they were self-awarded. Practical implications AFNs can derive benefits using labels. Self-organized, non-profit are well advised have designed.
